Evidence Based Early Intervention

This Blog is being created to inform parents and Early Intervention Professionals about the importance of providing services in the family's natural environment. I think it is important to provide families learning experiences in the home that are routine based and happen on a daily basis. It is important as professionals that we step away from our toy bags that we bring and then take away and try to embed our strategies for learning into their everyday routines. When we leave a home visit the family needs to be able to take the information and strategy that we discussed and implement it into their day routine. For Example : lets say the child is working on a language, Language happens every day , when the child is getting dressed the family can work on labeling the clothing items , making choices, the weather outside and what they should wear for that type of weather etc. These things do not come in toy bags and they are strategies that the family can do on a daily basis. This model of providing services to the family is Called Evidence Based Early Intervention. The family has access to a team of professional with one primary person who teams with other professionals such as OT, PT and Speech professional. If the family needs a PT in the home , then they are provided. The Primary person also works with the other professionals as they coach the parent in activities to promote learning in their every day environment. When Professionals leave the home the family can then work with the child with those strategies that the whole team and parent have come up and work with the child in their natural environment. Children learn best when they are in their own surroundings and by caring people.
